A 22-year-old has decided to call in sick from work to mourn the retirement of his childhood hero and Warriors legend Shaun Johnson.

This comes after the 33-year-old playmaker decided to hang up the boots at the season’s end.

The Warriors veteran who turns 34 next month told his teammates in a team meeting before announcing it to the public.

“This is a decision that I’ve sat with for a while now and one I’m probably still coming to terms with,” he said.

“It’s obviously still very raw but I’m so grateful to the club and to you boys who I get to come into work with every day with a smile on my face. I have never taken any of it for granted.

The 22-year-old writer said he called in sick due to “emotional distress” after seeing yesterday’s news followed by watching Shaun Johnson highlight reels on YouTube.

“It’s sad seeing your favourite player who you watched as a 9-year-old make his debut in 2011 to the player he is now, this will definitely take time to heal”.
