It is understood that New Zealand’s second-most powerful and senior police officer is on leave pending an investigation relating to inappropriate conduct with a junior staff member.
Deputy Commissioner Jevon Mcskimming was one of two finalists to take the head Police Commissioner role earlier this year after Andrew Coster resigned earlier this year.
However, he was overlooked by Richard Chambers who was appointed for the role just last month.
McSkimming is now under investigation by the police and the Independent Police Conduct Authority.
Police Minister Mark Mitchell said it was inappropriate to comment while the investigations were underway.
Police Association president Chris Cahill said: “I don’t comment about active officer investigations, especially given the very limited public information.”
In a statement, an IPCA spokesperson said it would not comment “at this time”.
It is understood that McSkimming has been on leave for several weeks but still remains to be an important figure in the police executive.
In 2023, McSkimming was promoted to deputy commissioner on the recommendation of Chris Hipkins, who was Prime Minister at the time, following a Public Service Commission selection process.
“Deputy Commissioner Jevon McSkimming brings a relatively unique career path within New Zealand Police,” according to a report presented by Hipkins to Cabinet.
