A man in Invercargill has been arrested after being involved in the quickest robbery and apprehension possible – one whole minute.

A group of cyclists were enjoying a post-race meal, when the thief had an ingenious idea to steal a $15,000 racing bike then zoom off.

After seeing the robbery take place “two of the cyclists mounted their bikes and went into pursuit of the man” Sergeant Geoff Sutherland said.

According to police the suspect “did not stand a chance” only making it two or three blocks before being pincered manoeuvred and sandwiched in.

“For him the race was the over”

The out of breath bike thief was arrested just minutes later, Sutherland said.

The $15,000 racing bike only sustained minor damage and the owner was back on it racing again the next day.

The 31-year-old man charged with theft will appear in Invercargill District Court on Monday.
