It seems the saying “You can take the boy out of Otago but can’t take the Otago out of the boy” rings far too true. Ben Harvey a 20-year-old commerce student originally from Auckland has been studying at Otago University for the past two years and has become deeply entrenched in the so-called “Breather lifestyle”.

Breathers are often found on the north streets of Dunedin wearing jorts, and plaid shirts (Sometimes a huffer puffer during winter) and are usually accessorised with a “seedy mo” and a box of speights or cost-effective flames. If you cannot see them you’ll be able to hear their calls often saying phrases such as “Yeah the boys” or alternatively “Don’t dog the boys”.

On the arrival of Ben’s return to his parent’s suburban six-bedroom Remuera home was the immediate smell of blueberry ras vape from when he picked up a crippling nicotine addiction but as he says “I’m gonna stop” which he has recited 27 times in the last week.

Ben’s grandparents came over for lunch to see what Ben had learnt during his time at University, He promptly got up and said “Hey grandad look how fast I can shotgun this beer.”
