A sometimes waterlogged, bird-filled site on Armaugh Street in Central Christchurch has now become one of the highest-rated attractions.
The site, which was formerly the basement of the PricewaterhouseCoopers building before the 2011 Earthquake has now become a haven for the endangered Red and Black Billed Gull.
In a city that has lots of touristy activities to offer such as Punting on the Avon and the Botanic Gardens the Armaugh Street Seagull Pit has some tourists both confused and astounded.
“Such a pleasure to see these birds close up, a rare opportunity in these trying times. I enjoyed the redness around some of their eyes, especially when they screamed,” one user wrote.
“Come see the perfect example of mother nature, where man and beast live side by side in perfect harmony,” another wrote.
One other user had a bit of fun saying “This was truly an unbelievable experience! I flew internationally to marry my wife in front of the seagulls 💍”
The Google Maps listing showed that the pit was “open 24/7” and had a 4.4/5 star rating from users of the service.
However, not everyone saw the fun of it as Colin Lyness from the UK said “I wouldn’t say this is a great tourist attraction.”
With another saying it reminded them of Ground Zero in New York.
Technology and Business commentator Paul Spain said computer automation was probably responsible for the listing
“It’s somewhat heavily automated and an algorithm is taking the different bits of feedback.
“It means the data is not necessarily correct or accurate and I guess that’s what’s happened here.”
As far as Google was concerned, it was a popular spot, he said.
