New Zealand’s cyber watchdog has refused to answer any questions regarding whether or not the popular Chinese shopping app Temu may be a threat.

In the USA, lawmakers have sought a briefing over whether Temu is a risk to national security.

The National Cyber Security Centre stuck to general comments regarding the app saying with foreign apps, foreign laws with data gathering may apply, which is all well and good when you can buy novelty lamps for ten dollars.

Kiwis should be “cautious about the privacy and security implications of downloading any app” was the general message.

In a report last year, the federal commission in the US said Temu’s parent company Pinduoduo, a popular shopping app in China, said it could spy on users.

Google then suspended the Pinduoduo app in March last year over security concerns.

However, these are the same people who accused the TikTok CEO of being Chinese when he was in fact Singaporean.

The biggest issue in New Zealand regarding Temu is overconsumption.
