New Zealanders are known for their Kiwi ingenuity and we are known for more or less some quirky but cool inventions.
Here are ten of some of the all time Kiwi inventions.
- Zorb Ball
One of the all time great inventions, literally rolling down a hill or bumping off one of your mates in one of these is so much fun.
- Bungee Jumping
Probably one of the most well-known and influential Kiwi Inventions. AJ Hackett got the idea for Bunjee after watching people in Vanuatu jump off towers with vines attached to their ankles.
He then created a system of plaited elastic bands and created bungee.
- Instant Coffee
Well not instant coffee as we know it today but “Soluble instant coffee” that was sold commercially was invented by David Strang in the booming metropolis of Invercargill in 1890.
- X Shot Fast Fill Water Gun
Not one of the well-known Kiwi inventions but very important, nothing worse than having a waterfight and waiting ages to refill your gun, you’re a sitting duck at that point.
- Jet Boats
Well at the end of the day, NZ does have the adventure capital of the world so it makes sense.
- Hypodermic Needle
Medical marvel.
- Referee Whistle
A small but mighty invention, used all across the world.
- Jet Pack
I mean come on, most kids dream of having one of these and Kiwi Glenn Martin made it a reality in 1998 wth the first commercially sold Jetpack
- Number 8 Wire
Also a symbol of New Zealand meaning ingenuity and resourcefulness, the number 8 wire is now the standard when it comes to farming fencing.
- The egg beater
One of the great baking marvels, Ernest Godward invented the egg beater in 1900, the baking utensil prepared eggs for a sponge cake in 3 minutes compared to the usual 15.
