TVNZ has backtracked on its proposal to axe its 1News website as part of its efforts to recover $30 million.

The broadcaster announced earlier this month that it will be closing the website in February next year.

However, a spokesperson for TVNZ revealed that they had decided against that move and chose a number of different changes including a “reduced” 1News website, investing in news on TVNZ+, creating a new creative hub and Creating centres for excellence for data, analytics and AI.

Earlier this month, TVNZ told staff that they wanted to cut 1News.co.nz and the 1News app entirely, as part of a larger proposal to save $30 million annually.

But now they said another stage of consultation will begin.

“We’ve confirmed with TVNZers the strategic changes we’ll be making to the business to help us reach our $30m target and deliver on our Digital+ strategy,”

In May, TVNZ axed long-running and celebrated current affairs programmes Fair Go and Sunday. It also axed roles from Re: News and other parts of its business.
