Supermarket chain New World is taking security to a whole new level by employing facial recognition to reduce the recurrence of harmful behaviours.

The technology collects facial images of everyone entering the store and will compare them with images of people who have previously committed harmful behaviour in the store, otherwise known as “person of interest”

A person of interest is someone who has previously offended in a New World store, been violent or aggressive or been trespassed previously.

If you engage in harmful behaviours they will save your photo for future references.

However, not all New World stores will have facial recognition technology and only ones clearly displaying the signs at the entrance will employ it, with a clear warning stating,

“If you do not want your personal information collected, please do not enter our store”.

There have been questions of privacy, however New World states if there is no match between your image and a person of interest it will be deleted immediately.

If you are a person of interest the photo will be kept for two years or three months if you are an accomplice.
