The irony of it all, even those trying to improve our education systems get it wrong as Prime Minister Christopher Luxon found himself in a spot of bother after stumbling over a maths question asked by an 8-year-old boy.

Luxon was on an episode of the Lead on Purpose podcast, when the question was put to him by Finn Laughlin, the podcast host’s son.

In a quickfire round the Prime Minister was asked to answer 7×8, he answered 42 before quickly changing it to 56.

“I’m glad you got that,” the boy said in response to Luxon’s mistake.

“Shivers, I am glad too mate,” Luxon replied.

The founder of the podcast, James Laughlin said the situation was amusing given the recent changes to the maths curriculum.

“We understand the education component around kids not getting their times tables right, and their reading and their writing, so we can see there is a funny kind of irony to that,”

“Finn also thought it was funny when the prime minister got it wrong. He said he struggles with seven times eight, but now he’ll never get it wrong at school again.” he added.

In August, the Government announced new measures in an attempt to improve maths achievement among primary school students.
