A 57-Year-Old Kiwi has taken his scrabble talents abroad and managed to sweep the competition taking out the Spanish Scrabble World Championship, despite not being able to speak the language.
Nigel Richards, took out the title after defeating his opponent in the final in Grenada overnight.
Over the course of the games, Richards demonstrated an exceptional ability to recall Spanish words, Reuters reported.
This win adds to Richard’s very impressive resume of World Championship Titles accumulated between 2007 and 2019, including previously winning the French-language Scrabble world championship in 2015, also without speaking the language.
The NZ Association of Scrabble said New Zealand has “historically done very well in international tournaments”, especially considering the small population base.
Richards won the title with three games to spare and continued his streak of being unbeaten in 21 games.
Originally from Christchurch, Richards now resides in Malaysia.
