Just a whole three minutes into the new gang patch ban, a Mongrel Mob Member has been charged for displaying gang insignia on the dashboard of his car.
The new gang patch law came into force at midnight. The first person under the ban was caught at 12.03am on Thursday.
Police said a 51-year-old Napier man has now been issued with a court summons after officers spotted a large Mongrel Mob sign on the dashboard of his car.
The sign has now been confiscated.
New Police commissioner Richard Chambers, who was announced on Wednesday said the arrest went fine and there were no other issues.
He said there were no other incidents under the new legislation that he knew about.
When officers pulled the man over, he was not wearing a patch but displayed a sign that was against the law.
Police Minister Mark Mitchell believed the man was sent out to test the new law.
“Coming out and trying to be defiant at midnight by displaying the sign and action was taken”.
