A man has died after threatening police and biting an officers hand after fleeing police in Papakura on Sunday afternoon.
The man was one of two people taken into custody at Orere point after a chase ensued.
Assistant Commissioner Jill Rogers confirmed the man’s passing yesterday afternoon.
“Taser, OC spray and a police dog unit had been deployed after the man challenged and threatened officers with a samurai sword and bit an officer,” Rogers said.
After being apprehended by officers, the man became unresponsive.
“Medical assistance was immediately provided however tragically the man was unable to be revived.
In an earlier statement, police said an officer had identified a vehicle that was apart of an on-going investigation on Great South Road at roughly 2:15pm.
Police said the driver failed to stop and was monitored by the Eagle helicopter as it drove to Ōrere Point, where it came to a stop on the beach about 3.20pm.
The driver of the car was arrested without any apprehension but it was a whole other story for the passenger.
“The passenger of the car challenged police officers, threatening officers with a samurai sword and biting the hand of one officer.
“That officer has been transported to a medical centre for treatment.
“Officers deployed Taser, OC spray and a police dog unit, which enabled them to take the man into custody without further injury to officers.
Whilst in custody the man became unresponsive and tragically lost his life.
