It has officially been announced one of New Zealand’s oldest beers will be discontinued.
The drink, mainly consumed by men over the age of 50 has been a staple beer in many rural Kiwi pubs but with demand dwindling its manufacturer, Lion Breweries said the 4% beer will be no more.
Canterbury Draught, a pale lager, was based on Wards Beer which was created in 1854. The brand was launched in 1990.
A Lion Breweries spokesperson said it had stopped making bottles and cans of the beer about 10 years ago, but continued brewing for kegs as long as it could.
“It’s always very sad to let go of an iconic brand; however, with consumer choice increasing and tastes changing, it gradually declined in popularity and so was not commercially sustainable anymore.
Whilst there are still many diehard Canterbury draught fans Lion Breweries sent them all a message thanking them for their support over many years.
