Prime Minister Christopher Luxon has responded to angry parents about the new school lunches, saying, “Go make a marmite sandwich and put an apple in a bag.”

This comes after the new school lunch scheme received complaints including late delivery, unsealed containers, burnt food and lunches just not turning up in general.

“If you really are unhappy with it, for God’s sake, go make a Marmite sandwich and put an apple in a bag just like you and I had.”

Luxon said he’d rather the state not be responsible for feeding hungry students.

“I think parents should take responsibility for feeding their own kids, I’d rather the state not have to do so, it should be a parental responsibility.

“The fact is that kids are actually coming to school with no lunch and I’m not willing to let them go hungry.”

Prime Minister Luxon did admit that some of the lunches were not up to standard and asked ACT leader David Seymour who heads the revamped system to chase down the issues and sort it out.

“I have every confidence that he’s going to get it sorted.”

These comments come as Seymour faces mounting pressure over the rollout of the new lunch scheme.

For many schools, the rollout hit many potholes along the way with some reporting issues and having to purchase replacement food to keep their students fed after inconsistencies with the deliveries.
