Buckle up, international members of the Mongols gang are expected to travel to Christchurch for an event marking five years since the gang’s arrival in Aotearoa.

Police in Canterbury have planned a major operation around the event – thought to coincide with a national meeting from November 7 to 10, and have drafted in staff from two other districts to help.

The members are expected to meet the gang’s original pad, a fortified property on SH1 Burnham, on the outskirts of Christchurch.

Canterbury district commander Superintendent Tony Hill said they were unsure how many members were expected to attend, but police had planned a significant operation based around a “reasonable turnout”.

That included drafting in additional officers from the Southern and Tasman police districts to help, Hill said.

“We do have a considerable resource, and have been putting quite a bit of planning into how we’re going to police them while they’re here.

The event would also be an opportunity for police to remind the gang about incoming legislation banning people from wearing gang patches in public, Hill said.
