As a part of embracing its inner bogan heritage, Upper Hutt will be changing its name to Bogan Town for the highly anticipated Bogan Day Out over the weekend of the 8th and 9th.
The festival will celebrate all things bogan, featuring live music, quirky comps and an unforgettable atmosphere.
Phil Gorman, born and bred in Upper Hutt with pure Bogan blood, became so sick of Bogan being a bad thing that he changed the official welcoming sign to Bogan town.
“This is the home of bogan. So we’ve got Bogan Town on the sign,” Gorman said.
Gorman actually went to the sign welcoming everybody and the early hours of Monday morning and replaced the words so it reads out its rightful name “Bogan Town”.
“Fortunately, the words match up. It fits perfectly.”
Now you would think doing this would get you into some hot water with the war but the change has actually been sanctioned by Upper Hutt Mayor, Wayne Guppy.
It is just a small part of Upper Hutt’s first-ever bogan week, celebrating all things bogan.
“We’ve typically been tarnished with a bit of a bogan reputation and we’ve decided to embrace it,” said Gorman.
The Bogan Day Out will showcase a lineup of tribute bands, including Stoned Templar Pilots, Black Knight, and Squealer.
There will also be the Brewtown BBQ Comp which will be the event’s centerpiece, with some of the country’s best BBQ teams competing for grilling supremacy.
Event organiser, Phil Gorman, who was born and bred in Upper Hutt, shared his enthusiasm. “We’re ready to embrace our bogan roots and celebrate Upper Hutt’s fun and wild side,” he says.
