New data has revealed Kiwis are choosing to throw away the ciggies and alternatively pick up the rolled notes.

According to the latest annual drug trends survey, Cocaine availability and use is increasing, while vapers outnumber smokers of traditional cigarettes for the first time.

Massey University has been asking thousands of Kiwis about their drug habits annually for the last 7 years.

Lead researcher Chris Wilkins suggests the latest survey results show an increased availability of the devils dandruff, particularly in Auckland, Northland and the Bay of Plenty.

Interestingly enough, cocaine was one of the only drugs whose price had not dropped since the last survey.

Cannabis was the most widely used illegal drug, second was MDMA with 45% of respondents saying they had used it in the last six months, third was LSD also with 45%, followed by cocaine at 23% up from 12%, ketamine at 19% and lastly nitrous oxide at 18%.

Least surprisingly, alcohol use is still at 86%.

Vaping leapt from 48% to a staggering 64% and tobacco use fell from 58% to 50%.

Meth was most popular in Manawatū-Whanganui, Waikato and Northland, while MDMA and ketamine use were highest in Otago, Wellington and Canterbury. 

Cocaine use increased in all regions, but was particularly available in Auckland, Northland, Waikato, Taranaki and the Bay of Plenty.
