A man who strangled his partner due to hunger and the inability to get UberEats after an All Blacks game has lost his bid to avoid conviction because he may be unable to work in the mines in Western Australia.

Judge Glen Marshall found the man to be a “demanding and belligerent partner who was verbally abusive over a considerable period” in the Hamilton District Court yesterday afternoon.

Judge Marshall found him guilty of two charges of male assault female and one of assault with intent to injure.

The perpetrator’s victim, who is in her early 20s spoke in court about the “memories and trauma” she endured during the relationship.

“As a result, I found myself homeless. A situation that only deepened my sense of despair.”

The trauma and stress resulted in her losing half her body weight just six months after leaving the abusive relationship.

“My body and mind are both depleted. It feels as though I am constantly fighting just to survive.”

She has since left her hometown moving many hours away but unfortunately, that came with loneliness and isolation.

She then addressed him, stating, “For years you used manipulation and narcissistic tactics to instil fear and guilt with absolutely no remorse”.

“You sit here today, still with no remorse or even acceptance of your actions.”

She has urged the judge not to discharge the man without conviction.

“I want nothing more than to be safe,” she added.
