A 35-year-old man in Taupo has been caught trying to steal highly sought-after and rare Pokemon cards in Taupo.

A police spokesperson said officers were called to the Taupo store by a member of the public at around 10 pm on Tuesday.

“The offender smashed a glass panel to gain entry and placed Pokémon trading cards, worth more than $2200, into bags.

A local passer-by saw the break-in  and called police while taking video of a suspect walking away.”

Officers then tracked the team rocket wannabe to a nearby bar, where he was taken into custody and the cards recovered.

The man is also a prime suspect is a burglary last November when $500 worth of Pokemon cards were stolen from the same store.

The 35-year-old man has been charged with burglary, shoplifting and resisting police.
