Multiple students have been injured after a car mounted the footpath before hitting trees and pedestrians outside of Auckland University.
A witness said the car had been driving down Symonds Street at about 50km, the police were notified about midday.
“One person has been transported to hospital in a critical condition and two other people have suffered moderate injuries.” Police said.
The witness said the car mounted the footpath hitting multiple people as they tried to dive out of the way.
“Lots of students jumped out of the way but some got hit bad.” the witness said.
Another bystander said they heard the car mount the curb and sideswipe a tree before it got onto the footpath.
“The driver tried to turn back onto the road at the lights but couldn’t and smashed into the tree.”
The University of Auckland said they have been made aware of an incident involving pedestrians and are just finding out the details.
Symonds St is closed from Wellesley St to Grafton Rd and diversions are in place. Motorists are advised to expect delays.
Police have also notified the serious crash unit.
