There is a new puppy on patrol around the streets of Dunedin, his name, Murphy the 14-week-old Beagle.

The new police pup is often seen patrolling the streets next to Constable Emily Tomooka outside the King Street bus stop which is out front of the Dunedin police station during the busy hours before and after school.

The patrol started after Murphy, who is currently training to be a trauma specialist dog was nonchalantly seen doing his business outside of the police station.

The attention he received was noticed and Tomooka asked if he could become a part of the regular foot patrols.

The police pup has helped break down barriers with many people, including teens who were hesitant to talk to police officers.

Murphy has also been a hit with other pedestrians and bus patrons and has been invited to take a tour of the bus.

He has to remain vigilant however just in case he needs to attend an incident.

Good work Big Dog.
