According to a new international study, Aotearoa is among the top nations to survive famine, war, and a global collapse; however, the map summarising the study leaves us off the map.

The research, conducted by the online publication Nature Food and published in May, analyses domestic food production in 186 countries to measure their ability to feed all citizens without relying on imports.

The report suggests that over a third of all countries cannot meet self-sufficiency for more than two of the seven essential food groups.

However, Aotearoa is completely self-sufficient in five of the seven food groups, says Jonas Stehl from the Department of Economics, University of Goettingen in Germany.

We only fell short in the “legumes, nuts, and seeds” and “starchy staples” range of foods, but excelled in dairy, fish and seafood, fruits, meat and vegetables.

The researchers thanked the news organisation Stuff for “raising an important point” about leaving us off the map.

We take your concern seriously and have looked into the issue. It appears that there was a technical glitch… which led to New Zealand not being displayed visually,” Stehl said.

“We sincerely apologise for the glitch with the map. We are currently discussing our options to fix it.”
