A security guard at the University of Auckland has been dismissed after taking a University-owned 55-inch TV and putting it up in his flat.

The guard was a full-time student in 2022 and began working part-time in security around campus.

On his second day on the job, the guard was one of three helping contractor Grant Thornton, and his team of workers remove some audio-visual equipment and install new equipment.

The removed equipment, including the TV, was placed in storage to be used later, disposed or sold.

The guard used his car to collect the TV and took it to his flat. He also took a power supply unit from the university premises a few weeks later.

About a month after the guard took the TV one of his flatmates sent an email to the university advising it that he had “returned home the other day with a TV he bragged about stealing from the University”. The email was accompanied by photos of the TV. What a snitch

Following an investigation, the guard was sacked in November 2022.
