There is nothing worse than worms in your meat, but this what allegedly happened to an Auckland man at his pre-Christmas BBQ.
The Auckland man said his function with his extended family was “ruined” after discovering the garden invertebrate wriggling around in his Costco purchased meat.
The man, who wished to remain anonymous, said he bought two trays of lamb cutlets and ground beef from the wholesaler on November 25th before returning home and putting them in the freezer.
On December 1st, the man had organised a pre-xmas barbeque function, but things soon turned south when he saw something wriggling on the same lamb cutlets he had bought days earlier as they were sizzling on the grill.
In images supplied the man initially believed they were maggots, but now thinks it could be some kind of worm.
He said he was certain nothing he had done with the meat could have caused the incident.
“I got the two trays of lamb out of the freezer, they had gladwrap over them, and I put them outside on a table under an umbrella to defrost for a couple of hours, so they weren’t even in direct sunlight.
All of the meat including the 40-plus lamb cutlets, ground beef, meat patties and more totalling $226 was all thrown in the bin and the man and guests opted for a vegetarian meal.
“It was actually disgusting… We didn’t have any meat, just salad.”
A Costco spokesperson has refused to comment on the incident, saying they don’t believe it should be publicised, however the man did receive a full refund from Costco but believed they were trying to sweep the whole ordeal under a rug.
